do not increase through the consciousness, they do not increase at all.

The same thoughts can be expressed in evolutionary perspective, or in space-time. So long as evolution lasts, people are imprisoned in a flux of time. Naturally everyone is in his own flux, since everyone is a separate person; but the fluxes do not wander at random, they tend to group into family bundles and even community bundles, so as to give the whole bundle, or phylum, roughly the same direction through time as long as the bundle lasts. In addition, individual fluxes, and bundles of fluxes, will tend to ramify as zoological groups have always done in the past. To climb very hard climbs, you have to enter a mountain world. To master a profession, you need to dedicate yourself to it. To prosper in business, you need to be at home in the world of money. Each of these examples is a typical ramification in the intellectual world of space-time. Probably in space-time fluxes are never individual for long, but always in bundles, although any particular flux may switch from one bundle to another very much more easily than is possible in the animal world. We are all so dependant on each other's affections, that for practical purposes a single flux represents someone who has opted out, and severed as many bonds of natural affection as he can. A person can opt out of community life either temporarily, through inadequacy, shyness, ill-adjustment, or simply cowardice, or permanently by becoming embittered. When a flux switches from one group to another, it represents a person changing his environment or attempting to exchange one person's affection for another's however inadequately this is done.

So long as a person is imprisoned in a flux of time, it is possible for him to have an inner darkness, or lack of confidence, and yet be entirely unaware of it. The sense of direction, the sense of urgency that the flux of time imposes,…
