Chapter 25 - The Dead Theory of the Church’s Marriage Bond

So much for the Church's views on divorce; now for its views on the true marriage bond. If one wants to find out a person's real views about something, one does not go to that person's carefully prepared pronouncements on that subject. These will generally have been prepared, not with an eye to truth, but with an eye to the audience who is listening. One goes instead to the remarks which that person made in an unguarded moment, and one studies them; because they will have been made without forethought, without calculation as to their likely effect, and they will unwittingly betray what that person really thinks about the subject. As Christ once said, it's for every idle remark that a man is judged; and this is precisely what he meant.

If therefore one wants to find out the Church's views on the true marriage bond, one does not read a book about the Church's views on the true marriage bond. Instead, if one has any sense, one reads a book on the Church's views on the imperfect marriage bond; then reading between the lines one can find out what the Church thinks about the true marriage bond. It ought to be as clear as the light of day, in spite of the fact that it is only by implication that one perceives the truth.
